Since switching to outlook.com in March, I have had this problem non-stop. (I still have Yahoo, but it's not my primary email, and I have never had a problem with it,)

Mail comes in and mail goes out, but on initial opening, or almost anytime that I am in outlook, the page freezes and in order to open (read, reply, delete, move, or any action), I have to refresh the page. On my page, there is a flag (a little box) that says. "1 item." I have no idea what the box is letting me know about, but the two things happen simultaneously.

There is no conflict in IE. I disabled all add-ons, one-at-a-time, and that didn't resolve the problem. After twelve fruitless conversations with Microsoft, they concurred that it's a browser issue, not a MS issue. And naturally, after me telling them twelve times that the issue doesn't occur in IE, they determined it's a Firefox conflict with outlook, not an outlook.com conflict with Firefox. How do you tell the difference?

Does anybody else have this same freezing issue with outlook.com? Have you got a resolution? Thank you.

A p.s to the above. Outlook was very unstable prior to the update. Whenever I was on my mail page, the outlook tab was constantly flickering - refreshing itself. or constantly searching for something - it's hard to explain. The flickering or bouncing, or whatever is the technical term is, was not affecting my reading or writing of mail, because it was just the header. Do you know what I mean? That is not happening anymore.

First you should update to Firefox 22, Update Firefox to the latest release, then try again.

I must have turned off the automatic update reminders. I just updated FF and the very first email after restart froze.

Thank you for the reminder, but that was not the issue.

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

The chances seem high that I will inevitably lose some saved settings. Is this a catchall kind of recovery, for all those issues that nothing else seems to fix?

Since I am working now, I will try this when I have more time to restore what might be necessary to restore.

Thank you for your very prompt response.

Since that immediate freeze yesterday after updating, I haven't had one issue with outlook. Do I attribute total success to the update - even with that glitch? Technology sometimes baffles me and sometimes there are too many coincidences that are not explained.

All works normally without any additional tweaks. Thank you very much.

Hate to say it, but Outlook.com is misbehaving again. It has reverted to freezing, just like before. I guess updating did not solve the problem.

Do you have suggestions, or should I start a new post because this one is marked as solved?

Thank you,

This is happening to me. It started in October, except when it freezes my computer, I have to hard boot in order to restore functionality. My Firefox is up to date and I run windows 7. I have no idea what the cause is but its incredibly frustrating.

If I knew whose responsibility it is, I would pursue that route and share my answers. Meanwhile, I've been dealing with it for eight months and continually refresh the page. Interesting that it freezes your computer - I think that would cause me to avoid outlook mail.
