When I open gmail , every time I have a new tab, and I have to keep deleting them which is a bore, so how do I change the setting so I only get one tab?

I open gmail, either to read my emails or compose one to send, and the page opens on a new tab every time. This means I have, after accessing gmail a few times, I have to delete the tabs (with ctrl + W) until I get to the current tab/page. I don't want to have to keep deleting the unwanted tabs! I like my things simple ....

Check the settings in Gmail for whether each email opens in a new tab or the same tab.
