Most times when I open Thunderbird, it shows the bar on the bottom scrolling then stops with no messages downloaded from my server, then when I select get mail the next time, the messages will download. Sometimes when it doesn't download messages, I can go to my server at peakinternet mail and see I do have messages that haven't downloaded. Then I open Thunderbird again and they will download. ISP says it not the server. Thanks

Try disabling email scanning in your anti virus program. See if that helps. I think it will.
