I've blocked all webpages from my university by accident.

Thanks for your help. I was on my university's Blackboard site (I'm an instructor) and was trying to listen to student podcast assignments. An icon like a lego brick appeared with the message 'A plugin is needed to play this content'. At the top of the icon was a small link which said 'Block X'.

I clicked on that link, assuming it would allow me to 'unblock' the material. In that Firefox window I asked for all material to my university's domain name www.nd.edu.au to be unblocked, but now I've lost all access to all its pages. It looks like I've blocked everything by mistake.

I've searched all add-ons, but can't work out which tool is shutting access down. I don't have many plugins. Those which are activated are: Addobe AAM Detect; Default Browser Help; Flip4Mac Windows Media Plugin; Java Applet; SharePoint Browser Plug-in; Shockwave Flash; and Silverlight.

It doesn't look like a Mac parental controls setting, as I can access those pages from Safari. Furthermore, starting Firefox in safe mode returns all access.

I've searched online for answers also.

If you use extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)


You can inspect and manage the permissions for all domains on the about:permissions page.

You can inspect and manage the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:

  • Click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar
  • Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
  • Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab

Delete the permissions.sqlite file to reset all permissions.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Thanks heaps. I went through the add-ons one by one. It looks like it was Adblock which I've uninstalled and then reinstalled.
