Backup begins then freezes

At the end of the day I close all programs then close Thunderebird 31.1.1. A screen opens asking if I want to backup, answer yes. Message is "During this operation, the program will be unresponsive for some minutes." and there is a green bar at the bottom showing the progress of the backup. The next morning the green bar is usually less than 50% across and progress is frozen.

I'm running Win7, 64 bit. Prior to Thunderbird I ran Eudora OSE.

with Zero knowledge of your system, I could guess that your running into an anti virus program that is trying to scan the files being backed up until the two simply freeze the process. Try creating an exception for your Thunderbird profile in your anti virus for on access scanning (you might also need to exempt the destination) and see if the hang up continues.
