Having installed Thunderbird successfully on lots of computers, I tried to set it up on a friends old PC running Windows XP. Download and Installation normal, but immediately we attempt to set up an email account Thunderbird says that it cannot connect to its server (before we try to enter any details, it is as normal offering to set up a new email address). When we attempt to enter manually the same details that function on another computer, it fails to find the settings automatically and cannot use the configuration if entered manually. (Both IMAP and POP setups). Connection to the internet using IE and Firefox, and Google Chrome are all normal, and the firewall and anti virus are both turned off. The email account can be accessed normally via the web.

reboot XP into safe mode with networking and see if things improve. (I think the Anti virus might by lying about what it is and is not doing.)
