not receiving mail, error code says RETR command did not succeed

I can open my firebird account, but when I attempt to get new mail, I receive the message "The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server pop.roadrunner.com responded: no such message".

The register in the lower left of the screen indicates I have more than 50 messages waiting to be received.
