How do I set up TB to put the local folders onto a separate hard drive than the rest of my profile?

I am often away from my office and my laptop does not have enough memory to load all my local folders (along with everything else I need). How do I set up TB to put only the local folders onto an external hard drive, and still have full use of TB (without local folders) if the external hard drive is not available.

No can do..... I suggest http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable as an alternative.
