I change my server settings, but changes not stored, next time I open old ones are back.
Recently my ISP (dslextreme.com) notified me that I needed to change my incoming and outgoing mail server names. They had been using a gmail system and are changing. The settings will become mandatory June 1, so I presume that in the meantime they are using a dual set of servers. I changed the server names and everything appeared to be working. Looking at the Thunderbird troubleshooting page the new server names showed up. But as soon as I closed and re-opened Thunderbird, the old settings were back. I checked to see if the permissions were wrong on the profile (I'm on a Mac running Yosemite). Not clear, but when I tried changing them on one of the e-mail accounts (I have 3) it didn't make any difference. I tried changing things using the account setting menu item, rather than the left-hand accounts display. No difference. What is going on?

Just leave the existing (and still working) account alone for the time being. Create a new account with the new settings. Does this work?
No, it doesn't. I can set up the account while Thunderbird is open, but then I can also change my server settings under the same conditions. The problem is that the changes are not saved. When I close Thunderbird and re-open it, the settings go back to what they were previously, and the new account disappears. It seems that since I last changed settings or set up new accounts, something in Thunderbird has changed so that it is blocking the saving of new information in the profile file. BTW--I notice that in my Mail & Newsgroups window, LH sidebar, each of the accounts has a little lock symbol by it, which may be related to my problem. Also, when I set up the new account it did make an new folder in the profile Mail folder, and now I have no access to the contents of it (i.e. the Inbox and Sent with a test e-mail in each). Clearly this is some kind of locking/permissions/assess problem in Thunderbird.

Do not worry about that padlock icon. This means that those mail accounts are using a secure connection and has nothing to do with permissions.
Thanks, one less blind alley to go down.
