I have mail forwarded from one account to another, on the server side. The second account is served via IMAP. In Thunderbird, I have a filter which moves such messages to a subfolder under "Inbox".

If I read one of these messages (so it's no longer marked as "new" or "unread"), and then drag it and drop it into "Inbox", sometimes it will "disappear" (i.e., it won't show up in either folder). If I search for the message, I get a hit suggesting that it is in "Inbox". However, if I click on the message, I get an empty window with a "Search..." message in the bottom corner which never seems to go away (unless it's overwritten by something else, like new mail arriving), and, if I click on "open email as list" in the search results, the message does not appear in the resulting list.

I've worked my way through the various suggestions in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1056327 and the pages that it references (including compressing and rebuilding the indices for both the source and destination folders), but the message still appears in the search but not in any folder.

Thanks for your help -- I really like Thunderbird, and I really depend on it -- I've used it for many, many years. So, it's deeply disturbing to think that something innocuous like moving a message between folders could send it irretrievably into limbo!

have your tries with your anti virus disabled? Windows safe mode with networking is the best test. Often anti virus program a a little aggressive in their scanning which causes file updates in Thunderbird to time out. Likewise they can adversely affect the process of moving a mail. Which is actually a delete and an add.

I'm on a Macintosh; I'm not running a full-time virus scanner. Also, I haven't seen issues moving messages between other folders, so I think it must have something to do with the From address and/or message filters, rather than an external source -- for better or worse, the scenario described above seems to be reasonably consistent in its behavior.

I found myself in the problematic scenario again this morning, but this time the folder I wanted to move the message to was another sub-folder of "Inbox" instead of "Inbox" itself. Being afraid that I would lose the message, I used "Copy To" from the pop-up menu instead of moving, and the copy worked fine. Then, just for "fun", I tried moving the copy of the message into "Inbox", and lo and behold it disappeared.

So, I retried the copy operation, but after doing so the message no longer appeared in the target (sub)folder. When I do the copy (I did it many times), I can see the message counts for the target folder increment; however, when I open the target folder the counts return to the original value, and the message does not appear in the folder.

If I pick a new target subfolder, then I am able to copy the message successfully. And, I am able to move the message to other "untainted" subfolders by dragging it. However, once I drag the message from a folder to "Inbox", the message disappears and the folder that I dragged it from becomes "tainted". When I try to copy the message or drag it to a subfolder which has been "tainted", the message disappears. (However, I can get the message back if I select the source folder and select "Undo" from the "Edit" menu, but the target folder remains "tainted".)

The other interesting factoid is that when I search for the message, the search finds only the original message (which I have left in the initial subfolder) -- it doesn't show any of the copies that I've made.

RE: Inbox and the subfolder under "Inbox".

clearly both folders are 'subscribed' folders otherwise you would not see them. But are both of these 'subscribed' folders 'synchronised' as well ?

My client is subscribed to all the folders on the server.

The server does not support shared folders (or so the client reports).

I have selected "Keep messages for this account on this computer".

I have (nearly) all the folders selected for offline use. (The ones which aren't selected haven't been involved.)

So, I think the answer to your question is "yes". (Thanks!)

Can you go to the Tools menu (Alt+T) > error console. Clear the console and then try the move. What appears in the error console?

It says "Error: mymailserver.node.net : server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555".

Does this mean my ISP's mail server is using old/unpatched SSL? Why does this issue only crop up in such a restricted and specific scenario?

Thanks!

Sorry -- I had the filter set to "Errors".

Moving the email also produces the following message: "Security Error: Content at imap://w%2Eusername%40node%2Enet@imap.node.net:993/fetch%3EUID%3E/INBOX/folder%3E1147 may not load or link to about:blank."

Ok the first error is almost always Yahoo. It refers to an unpatched SSL security vulnerability on the server. It does not affect you getting or sending mail. It is just the developers trying to place pressure on certain providers by producing error locally no one understands. Silly really.

This really sounds like either your ocal account is in some way corrupted totally, or the server side stuff is.

As this is an IMAP mail account. Could you try deleting it and adding it again? What mail provider is it?
