Thunderbird 38.1.0 freezes for 10 to 20 seconds after sending an email.
I noticed recently that Thunderbird becomes unresponsive after sending an email. I am unable to open messages in my inbox for reading or do any other operations. The condition usually clears itself in less than a minute. I tried disabling my antivirus and firewall. Neither helped. The Windows task manager reports that Thunderbird is waiting for network I/O during the freeze.
I am running Thunderbird version 38.1.0 on Windows 8.1. The problem is not present in version 31.1.2. I am using it as a temporary workaround.
Thanks, George

Try TOOLS-OPTIONS-ADVANCED- GENERAL tab. Uncheck 'Use Hardware Acceleration when available'.
Restart.
Thanks for the suggestion. I reinstalled 38.1.0 and unchecked the box. Last night at home and this morning at work, I was seeing good response from Thunderbird. The problem reappeared this afternoon. I reverted to version 31.1.2 which seemed to fix the problem.
Our systems at work are generally busier in the afternoon than the morning which could explain why the fix seemed to work last night and this morning but not in the afternoon.
Thanks, George
Weird. But if you've gone back to the old version and it works, I guess this thread can be closed.
I am thinking there may be some timing issue between Thunderbird and Windows 8.1. My colleagues at work running Windows 7 don't see the UI freeze like I do but they do see a noticeable delay in sending messages.
My wife, also running Widows 8.1, experiences the same UI freeze I see.
Thanks for you help, George
