I have an iMac 2011 with OSX 10.11 (El Capitan) just installed. Also updated Thunderbird to 38.3 today. Received a message on Firefox that Java was out of date and required updating. Did that (now Java 8 update 60), also installed updated Java Runtime update (used for LibreOffice). Tonight, when starting Thunderbird, it did not show folders in sidebar, and after getting new mail, I could not access message window (see image). The following came up in the error console:

This is Firefox support. I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

Use this link to check that your plugins are up-to-date. If any are listed as unknown or research, do not worry about them.

There is no image attached to your post. UPDATE Screenshot is at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1086609

Neither Flash nor Java are needed for Thunderbird. Therefore disable the corresponding plugins in Thunderbird in case they are enabled. Tools (Alt-T) - Add-ons - Plugins

Chris -

I tried your suggestion. I also disabled all plug-ins and extensions to test for any interference from any (including Conversations, which said I needed version 2.91 - had 2.10, but it would not update). Nothing changed. Trying to add screenshot of Thunderbird, but it did show in the window when I sent previously. Notice lack of folders on left of screen. Also will not respond to "view messages" when clicked. Does show activity when getting mail, but will not show inbox or folders.
