Every time I boot up this laptop and try to go to Firefox, there's a "Well, this is embarrassing" message. Every. Time. Why is that? Thanks!

Well, um, like the question asks, "Every time I boot up this laptop and try to go to Firefox, there's a "Well, this is embarrassing" message. Every. Time. Why is that?"

That page normally appears if Firefox detects that it did not shut down normally (i.e., it crashed) and Firefox wasn't able to restore the last session automatically.

(There is a hidden setting for whether to show that page immediately when restarting after a crash instead of trying to restore automatically first: browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes=0)

Do you use the Exit command to close Firefox? Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Allowing Windows to close Firefox during shutdown may lead to some routine maintenance tasks not running to completion, so I recommend using Exit if you haven't been doing that.

I'm not sure what else could create the symptoms of a crash.

If Firefox is still running when you shutdown computer then Firefox can crash as a result.

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File > Exit
  • Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File > Quit

Also make sure to wait long enough that Firefox can shut down properly. If you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" then this can take more time then you allow if you shutdown the computer immediately.

Thanks for your help. I close Firefox -- and everything else -- before I shut down the computer. Sometimes closing Firefox happens right before shutdown; sometimes it's long before. But the "...embarrassing" message pops back up on every reboot. I've been closing Firefox by clicking on the "X." I'll try the "File > Exit" method and see if that does the trick. Thanks again!
