previously email downloaded from the server stayed in my tbird inbox until i deleted it, now it's staying on the server and gets rolled off both tbird and servr
used to have it all download to my tbird account on my harddrive, no worries about the server holding mail or rolling it off and it's gone. I can't find how to do that with the new computer and new thunderbird version. is it the difference between pop and imap?

It could be. You do not say what you were using and what you have now. You should learn the difference between IMAP and POP and answer your question.
i followed the thunderbird directions for moving the email account, it directed me to use IMAP so that is how it's set up. From what I've read it seems that this could be the difference but before I attempt to make a change i would like to know if it's the right change. Again, from what I've read I would need to delete this account and set up a new one as POP and that there is no way to change the account to that. So I have done some research but it's still not completely clear to me.
It is correct you cannot change an existing account. This article explains how to make the new POP account and migrate over.

What is it that you do not like about IMAP and want to go back to POP?
I like to have my emails on my laptop and not on the roadrunner server. The way it is today when emails roll off the roadrunner server inbox they disappear from my Tbird account. Can't have that. I have searched the roadrunner server account to turn off that auto delete and have not found it. I've also checked Tbird setting for downloading and it appears as though it should be, but apparently something still isn't right. Once email is on the Tbird account I want it there for reference there is no reason to keep it on the server. I only use remote access once in a while to see new emails.
