won't keep me logged in

Hello,

I have been using Firefox for several years and until about a week or so ago it always kept me logged when I wanted it to. However, all of a sudden it won't do that for my yahoo account. I have the "keep me signed in" check box checked and I have white listed all the yahoo addresses involved with this.

Firefox 42 won't keep me logged in there any more. I have changed nothing (literally nothing). It just happened all of a sudden.

I have Win 10

Can someone help?

Did you check whether you are keeping Yahoo! cookies?

  • click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location/address bar
  • click the arrow to expand the security message
  • click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info"
  • click "Permissions" to inspect and modify permissions
  • click "Security" to inspect and modify cookies and passwords in a standalone window

This issue can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that are blocked.

  • check the permissions on the about:permissions page and in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

If you remove the cookies from the website or use cleanup software that does then the site will forget you and you need to log in again.

However, what you described wasn't available in the options>privacy section of Firefox. You mentioned "Cookies: Exceptions" but that was nowhere to be found.

There was a drop down list there, though, that had "use custom settings for history" in it. When I tried to use that, Firefox said it needed to restart. When it did, nothing changed. It still wouldn't keep me signed in. And after the restart, the browser defaulted to "never remember history". I have always been able to use my history and found it very useful--and my yahoo page still logged me in automatically every time (until about a week or so ago, anyway--and again, I never changed anything).

"Never remember history" means that you are in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; never remember history). You will have to remove the checkmark on "Always use Private Browsing mode" via "Use custom settings for history".

Thank you, again. I appreciate you trying to help--but, unfortunately, there is a, well, a "but" coming next...

...it didn't work. My yahoo page still won't keep me logged in. I did as you instructed but it simply did not work.

Are there any other suggestions that might help?

Hello,

That has apparently worked. However, it has seemed to work before only to go back to not signing me in. I am going to use it for a day or so to see if it has, indeed, worked.

I thank you for your help.

There is one other question I'd like to ask, though. How can I configure Firefox to ask me whether or not to save a cookie? In previous versions of Firefox it was easy to do that. In this version (42) I went through every screen I could find in the left panel of "Options" but could not find it anywhere.

It is probably best to install a cookie manager extension that supports this feature. You can search the Add-ons page.
