I am using firefox 42 and this has happen with the past 6 or so versions: I am able to to save bookmarks for a while, then all of a sudden I am not able to save any bookmarks, the only way to correct this is to refresh the browser then I loose all of my addons and preferences. This is very frustrating reloading all of this loss information. I even try to use the browser in safe mode and this still does not correct the problem. the only way to fix it is a reset.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

You may have to restore an older JSON backup if the last copy is already affected.

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite needs to be created, but no suitable JSON backups are available to rebuild the bookmarks or if you need to keep the history.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
