I just downgraded from Beta to ESR (currently 38), and now every time I go to a Mozilla site, I have a nag at the top, to upgrade to the latest version.

Is there a way to avoid this (about:config?) without invoking the almighty AdblockPlus?

It is possible that downgrading the profile by going back from Beta to ESR has caused this. I'm not seeing this bar if I use the Firefox 38 ESR version with its own profile if I go from www.mozilla.org/ to www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/products/, but I do get it with a Firefox 38 user agent in the current release so I'm not sure what triggers this bar.

Try to clear the Mozilla cookies.

  • click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) at the left end of the location/address bar
  • click the arrow to expand the security message
  • click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info"
  • click "Security" to inspect and modify cookies in a standalone window

Thanks, but after removing mozilla.org cookies, I still got this nag, even after logging in. I did click the "later" option, and evidently someone at Mozilla thinks that 2 minutes qualifies as "later" (well, technically, it does).

Anyways, I'll see if ABP can deal with this. Its not as if I'm on this site every day. One would think that whatever they are using to sniff out my useragent, could determine if I was on ESR. I don't know, but if they can see my version, why not somehere put, ESR=yes in the UA string?

Oh well, I don't make browsers. :(

Thanks anyways.

The UA's were made more simple (so as to not be unique) since Firefox 16.0.2 about if I recall. Before in UA's there used to be the build date of that version, the minor version and anything after version number like esr, b#, a2, a1 was removed.

I can see why for the sake of privacy, something that could identify a particular user by an unusual version of their browser, would be jettisoned. But then again, if I'm trying to evade the North Korean gestapo, I would probably be taking dramatic steps to increase my anonymity, and wouldn't be worrying about the default settings of the UA string. Oh well.

Yeah, I did notice a glitch with my downgrade. I lost the keywords for my bookmarks---not a major deal. So perhaps this was something else.

No biggie. I'm getting a new laptop in a couple of weeks, and this means a new profile as well. I know how to copy over what I need....

OK well thanks for your feedback.

Keywords are a bit of a nightmare in recent Firefox version, at least for me as I tend to copy bookmarks across browsers via the clipboard. That used to work fine in the past, but now all keywords get lost because a keyword belongs to the URL and not to the bookmark. So keywords are very fragile and can easily get lost.
