My inbox keeps showing copies of emails I have previously deleted, as if they have just arrived, each time I click on "get messages"

It is not always all messages that are repeated in my inbox , but seem to be a random selection.

This sounds like a corrupted Inbox folder. Please do the following to see if this improves the situation.

Move all good emails out of Inbox into other suitable folders for organising and storage. Delete all emails you do not want.

When Inbox is empty: right click on Inbox folder in Folder pane and select: 'Compact'.

right click on 'Junk' folder and select 'Empty Junk' right click on 'Junk' folder and select 'Compact' right click on 'Deleted/Trash' folder and select : 'Empty Deleted'

When you delete an email, from your point of view, it disappears from inbox and goes to Deleted/trash folder. In reality, it is 'marked as deleted' and hidden from view, but it is still in the Inbox. This means it is easy to retrieve an email deleted in error.

Compacting removes all traces of 'marked as deleted' emails. Usually, you do not need to fully empty the inbox before compacting, but I suspect that you have a corrupted Inbox. compacting on a corrupted Inbox can lose emails, hence asking you to empty it first. You should compact the Inbox and Junk folders on a more regular basis as these folders get the most activity. More info on compacting which I recommend you read.
