Hello,

Recently a lot of Youtube videos that I try and watch on Firefox do not seem to work, as all it shows is a black screen. On some videos that I have previously viewed before the problem I can watch, but for many new ones it does not seem to work.

I am resulted to having to view Youtube videos on Google Chrome which is a bit of a hassle changing from the two web browsers.

Can anybody help me with my problem?

Cheers.

Could you visit YouTube's test page here and report on how many blue boxes you have? Usually on Firefox on Windows 7, the first 5 boxes are blue and only the last one is red:

https://www.youtube.com/html5

Also, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Hello,

When clicking on the link https://www.youtube.com/html5, it shows all 6 boxes being blue.

And when starting Firefox in safe mode it allows me to watch videos now. So from now on, do I have to start Firefox in safe mode in order to watch these?

Or is there another way for me solve this with my add-ons still active?

Cheers.

It could be the work of one of your add-ons. Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.
