I'm not really trying to make firefox look any different or retro, I just want to get the tabs back in the right place. Currently each tab is at the top of the screen, and the address bar and bookmarks are appearing inside the tab along with the content, its looks so weird !

Firefox switched from tabs below the address bar to tabs above the address bar around the time of Firefox 4. Since Firefox 29, you need an add-on or custom style rule to switch back to the old position.

If Classic Theme Restorer (CTR) is too comprehensive, you could try something specialized:

Hi, tabs on top has been the default for a long time as mentioned by jscher2000. However you say 'The address bar and bookmarks are appearing inside the tab along with the content.'

If you have had tabs on the bottom, you must have been using an add-on, and it sounds as if an update (or not) may have broken it. So try updating Firefox: Open the 3-bar menu > Help (question mark at bottom right) > About Firefox. Alternatively, you can press the Alt key to bring up the main menu bar > Help > About Firefox. More - Update Firefox to the latest release.

If that doesn't fix it, open the 3-bar menu > Customize, and try clicking on Restore Defaults: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Finally, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

• Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

• On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
• On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
• On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
  (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Hi   again, I really, really wish that you'd provide a screenshot, for it just might be so, that we're misconstrueing what your saying   (or at least:  I might be).
In case you don't know how to create a screenshot:

Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the Browse... button below the Post your reply box. This will help us to visualize the problem.

(I always use the snipping tool,  but that of course is a personal choice)
