Is it possible to run a program each time a message is created to generate a unique signature?

My old mail program had an option to run a program to create a random signature each time a message was created (kind of like the old unix "fortune" program, but different). Is there such an option in Thunderbird? A useful addition to that was the option to replace the signature that was created without having to delete that message and start again (if, for the random sig was inappropriate for that particular recipient). Thanks! Bruce

Have a look at this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/randomsignature/

It looks like you have to provide your own "fortune cookies".

It's close, but those are "fixed" fortunes. If I'm allowed to run an external program of my design, it can include temporal bits, like the time I started writing the email (not necessarily the same time as it was sent), the current weather, what I'm listening to, etc.

no you can only use an add-on.

Okay, is there an add on that will let me run an external program to generate a signature?

Are there instructions somewhere about how to write an add-on?
