when i add a website to "my favorites" in internet explorer, they go straight into a drop down list, and can be arranged in alphabetical order, and i can rename it to something that suits me, HOW do i do that in Firefox please.

In Firefox you can quickly bookmark the current tab by clicking the star on the Navigation Toolbar. This will open a doorhanger that allows to edit the name (title) and the location (folder) of this bookmark. You can change some properties via the right-click context menu in the "Show your bookmarks" drop-down list (button next to the star) or open the Bookmarks Manager (Library) via Show All Bookmarks.
