Updating the status of an email in T'bird.

When I reply to an email using the reply button, the status is changed to replied, BUT if I want to add another person to the reply, the status of the original is NOT changed. This is a great nuisance as I can't see that I have replied to the incoming email, except by searching the Sent box, which wastes a lot of time. Is there a way to change the status manually or can this bug be fixed, please?
