Overriding colors in firefox breaks display of many Web pages
I have low vision issues, so would like to override the color of visited and uninvited links on all pages. However doing this breaks the display of many pages. I did not change any of the fonts, and I allow pages to chose their own fonts. But I still can not override link colors. Is it possible change these colors without breaking most web pages?

The built-in color settings are all connected (text, links, background) so you probably need to use an add-on or custom style rule to override colors only for links.
I haven't looked into this for a while, so I don't have a personal recommendation.
I could help with a custom style rule. What are your preferred colors? You can view the "code" for the color on the following page:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste color and pause while the list is filtered
(3) The currently selected colors are:
- Links to page you have not visited yet: browser.anchor_color
- Links to pages you have already visited: browser.visited_color
To copy the currently assigned value, you can right-click > Copy, and then paste into a reply.
By the way, if you ever want to restore these to their "factory default" settings, you can right-click each one and choose Reset.
Firefox is undergoing quite a lot of change, and there is no guarantee how long some of these addons will be available for but you may find this useful

I used firefox's tools-->options-->content-->colors to change the visited links color. I would assume that this would change
visited: browser.visited_color
Why this would cause large sections of various web-pages not to load is a mystery to me. Using an addon seems like overkill.
Selecting a preferred link color isn't the problem. The problem is changing the setting
"Override the colors specified by the page with your selections above:"
to Always. If you do that, it applies ALL of the color settings in that dialog and removes background images.
That's why I was going to create a custom approach for you that addresses only links. But in order to do that, I need to know the codes for your preferred colors.
Sorry for not giving the whole story earlier.
