Older version of Thunderbird for OS X would know that they not connected to the Internet, would act as though they are offline and then not attempt to connect to the Internet. (I think 16 worked OK). Newer versions (at least 45 and 52) will blindly try to connect to the Internet, even when there is obviously no connection. This is annoying to get an IMAP message but it's darn frustrating when I have 10 emails queued up from the plane and it keeps try to send the emails, one at a time, giving error messages one at a time.

Do you have settings the same as the image below? It shows my 'Options' window (I'm using Windows OS), but you should see the same via: 'Thunderbird' > 'Preferences' > 'Advanced' > 'Network & Disc Space' tab
