A few days ago my inbox indicated 105 new messages, even after I had already opened all new msgs. Also, I cannot find any 'new messages'. What's up?

The 'new mail' indicator (# in parentheses) by my inbox shows 105 new messages, but this has to be bogus - I have opened all valid new mail. I can't find any new messages when scrolling through all the already opened inbox messages. Are they virus emails? What is happening? How do I get rid of them?

I use View|Folders|Unread to help eyeball any that have scurried away into dark corners.

Filters, junk controls and anti spam tools can give rise to phantom new messages. by moving them before you can read them.

As an aside, I believe the message count in View|Folders|Unified is often incorrect.

Zenos post was helpful, but I still have questions. "View/folders/Unread" did not consolidate unread emails into a view screen. I did, however, review again my whole inbox by scrolling slowly and found many new messages (mostly dated to 2014) that were exact duplicates of the 'read' message just next to it - time stamp duplicate and everything. How does this happen? After deleting these duplicates, I did not have an indication of any more 'new' messages in my inbox. It also made me investigate other my other folders. I found in my 'Trash' folder over a hundred 'new' messages with only a date and time stamp of Dec. 1969 - no subject, no from, just the date. I didn't even have a computer in 1969! How does this happen?
