The update to FF 57.0.4 lost all of my bookmarks. I have backups going back over a year, but every " places.sqlite" I've restored has no bookmarks. I used to have MANY - at least a couple hundred from many years.

Please provide the name of all files and any special procedures need to recover my bookmarks.

I AM VERY PISSED THAT THE FF UPDATE DID THIS!

Thanks in advance.

Hi pmcdonal1, sorry to hear about the bookmarks problem. When you say --

every " places.sqlite" I've restored has no bookmarks.

-- how are you restoring them? Do you get your old history back or is that missing as well (it's also stored in places.sqlite)?

Make sure you remove possible places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal SQLite temp files when you replace places.sqlite with a backup copy. Note that older places.sqlite files might not be compatible because favicons are now stored in a separate favicons.sqlite file, so you may have to remove/rstore favicons.sqlite as well.

This did not allow me to restore bookmarks!

I did as suggested; delete all places.sqlite* and favicons.sqlite* and restore from at least 5 backups - NO GOOD!

Any other suggestions?

WHY WOULD FIREFOX MAKE A CHANGE LIKE THIS AND NOT WARN ANYBODY?

Do you mean you tried to restore Firefox's bookmark backups, or backups of the entire places.sqlite file?

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

WHY WOULD FIREFOX MAKE A CHANGE LIKE THIS AND NOT WARN ANYBODY?

This problem was not created intentionally so what would the warning say?

Note that places.sqlite files from older Firefox versions might not be compatible. If that is the case then Firefox adds a .corrupt file extension.

Does that happen in your case?

You would have to install an older Firefox version to be able to recover these files. Safest is to backup the bookmarks (HTML or JSON) instead of keeping a backup of places.sqlite although the latter includes the history.
