AOL is making my life miserable because they have done something to prevent Thunderbird from retrieving pop mail.

I have deleted my Thunderbird profile like AOL told me to. Re-entered the email address, ports, servers, password, etc as they instructed. Nothing works. This has been happening since April 30, 2018. It is affecting my account and my spouse's account. Is this a Thunderbird issue or an AOL issue? AOL web mail is working.

Might it be an anti virus program issue? I know I can not set up an account with Nortons internet security. Not unless I disable their email scanner and Sonar anyway. I am starting to think the most common cause of "I can not get mail" has moved from server down to Anti virus did it again.

Please use the procedures below to try and set up your account whilst in each mode.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
