Can't sign in to gmail, Firefox just closes tab or redirects to random page I visited before. How do I fix this?

more options

Recently I emptied my Browser Cache in Firefox 60.0.2 (Quantum, 64Bit). When I tried to sign in to gmail / googlemail, Firefox suddenly did the following:

- Redirected me to a different random site or page I visited before. (for example: gmail SignIn ---> some tumblr webpage) - When only one Tab was opened, it simply closed the tab (and itself). (This would classify as a crash?)

I tried closing and restarting Firefox with the same results. Emptying the cache again did not bring any improvement.

Ok, this approach of signing in to gmail in safe mode first did the trick. For some reason I can now log in in "normal" mode again, after having restarted Firefox. Still, very odd behaviour.

I guess for now, my problem has been solved. Since then, I had no problems with gmail. This could a viable workaround.

Thanks @Wesley and @pkshadow for helping me. :)

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista if you don't already have one. Windows 8/10 have antivirus protection built-in.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Ok, I tried Microsoft Safety Scanner, and it found nothing on my PC.

I then started Firefox in Safe Mode (Shift+Doubleklick on the Desktop Shortcut), and I could actually sign in to gmail again (after verification). So I guess its one of the add-ons messing up. The problem is, which one? It would be helpful to know / be able to monitor which add-on is responsible, or is malfunctioning at this very moment (=signing in to gmail)

Please scan with the other scanners as as well. Microsoft Scanner is not that good for finding Malware.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the issue is probably with uBlock, Adblock or Popup Blocker. Try whitelisting the Google domains from all of these addons so that they don't block anything that could prevent Google from working properly.
