In date ascending order (newest on bottom) when deleting last new message, last read message appears-want to stop that

My email is sorted oldest on top, newest on bottom. When I start reading my first newest mail (so the first in the inbox looking down-the one that came in first- say 9:25am), when I delete it, it moves to the next unread message in the inbox- say 9:27am). It will continue doing this until I delete the last new message, which is when it displays the last read undeleted email.

As an example, in Eudora, messages did not open in a new tab, but on top of the inbox. You delete the last message and you get your inbox.

As a side note, whether ascending or descending order, the next email down the list will show up once I delete an email. It only gies up the list when I am in ascending order and delete the last email.

I know I can just close the tab (and I guess it wants content from somewhere), but thought as a new user (and Eudora holdout) I would ask. So...

Any way (add-on or config) to make it so that either: Messages do not appear in new tabs or windows but in place of the inbox content (Eudora style) or Make it so that in my ordering, if I delete the last message in the inbox, it doesn't display the previous (older) message, and maybe just closes the tab (I guess that is asking a lot).

Do you guys just ignore that already read message coming up when you do your last delete of an unread message? Maybe I'm too picky.

Thanks in advance.

Michael

You will have to close your own tabs. Personally I use the mail reader (F8) pane for probably 99% of my mail needs, it does require the compact header add-on to make the message header small enough to not dominate the message pane, and in the process I have a heavily customized main toolbar with all the reply and forward buttons there.

The add-on is here. https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/compactheader/

If email has opened in a new tab and you delete or move that email, there is an option you can choose to 'Close message window/tab on move or delete'

'Menu icon (3 lines)' > 'Options' >' Options' >Display' > 'Advanced' tab select checkbox: 'Close message window/tab on move or delete' click on 'OK'

There is also an addon extension called 'Deselect on Delete'

This addon says it has been designed to work up to version 59. But that does not necessarilly mean it will not work on 60.

That's not quite it. What I'm looking for is the tab to close after the last new message is moved or deleted, not after I do that with each one.

As far as the add-on, again, not what I'm looking for, but thanks.
