Search bar is hidden (but I set "show search bar" in preferences)

Ubuntu 16.04. Firefox 62.0.3 (installed from Ubuntu packages).

I realize I'm in a minority on this, but I prefer to use the address bar for addresses (and history) and the search bar for web searches. I detest, loathe, despise the new appearance with the grossly oversized address bar that does everything.

So I went to Preferences and selected "Add search bar in toolbar" (screenshot -- well, I tried to upload a screenshot but the uploader seems to have hung -- anyway trust me, I know where the preference is and it is set as I want).

BUT... every time I launch Firefox, there is no search bar.

Is this a known bug?

What is the workaround?

James

Ubuntu has a way to modify its own branded Firefox version, so it is possible that Ubuntu wants to disable the Firefox search bar and use the location bar.

You can check that by trying the Firefox version from the Mozilla server.

You can try to ask at the Ubuntu support forum to see if this is a known issue.
