Can I get the previous search bar which filtered the result in the same window?
I just noticed a recent change in the search box on top of the message list which causes the search to open a different window with a very ugly results page.
Is it possible to revert to the old search option which simply filtered the list?

It sounds like you brought up the global search (Ctrl+K), instead of the Quick Filter Bar (Ctrl+Shift+K). It's under View/Toolbars (press Alt if View is hidden).
