updated Thunderbird to V.68.4.2 (automatic process with no prob) on 2014 MacMini with latest s/w; new Thunderbird became ridiculously slow; why? what to do?
Yesterday, I followed Thunderbird invitation to update its version to 68.0; I followed the automatic process which apparently resulted in version 68.4.2 Ever since the new version is on the machine the Thunderbird does not come up front on the screen by itself; the coloured circle is turning for a long time before anything happens on the Thunderbird page; appearance of an open page is somewhat different now, but that does not give me problems, the SLOWNESS DOES!!!!

It may be a problem with the Catalina OS ... But there are 3 little repair tricks to try when all else fails.
Rebuild Global Search Database: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database ,
Compact your Inbox (and other folders also): https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders ,
and repairing the Inbox: In the Folders Pane on the Left find the Inbox folder - with messages missing. Right Click on the Icon of that folder (still in the Folders Pane on the Left) and Choose Properties. Click the Repair Folder button then Click OK. (Wait a while for repairs to finish ... ) Look again to see if any messages have returned.
First: many thanks for your guidance! Appreciated. I went through the recommended processes and expect to make use of them in the future; thank you! The Rebuild Global Search database worked on a large number of emails: some 78800; it seemed to reindex 78000 and it reported that my two email addresses were completed ("is up to date") and took well overnight for the rebuild. But then the Activity manager, showed that it is downloading 1 of 770 in inbox at 1 PM and at 2 PM nothing has changed. I am not sure if I am to conclude that it has a problem with 770 items. i.e. that they are not recoverable??? Moreover, the reported slowness appears to be still there; i.e. it takes 18 seconds for the Thunderbird pane to show from behind other files after clicking on the Thunderbird icon. In conclusion: I would gladly return to the previous version of the s/w, except I did not even make a recording what version that was. Is that an option? I certainly understand that I have to trim the number of email that I am keeping, although the previous version did not seem to have (or indicate) difficulties with the number.
Repairing the inbox can force messages to be redownloaded, so I don't think that download occurence is related to your problem.
How much memory is Thunderbird using?
FWIW, you can call the coloured circle a "spinner"

Thanks, Wayne: the problem started not with the repair suggested by SeaMac, but by downloading the new Thunderbird version........ WHY would updated Thunderbird software make such a DRASTIC change in performance and how to undo the problem that it created is the QUESTION. The SeaMac suggestion were enacted and did not make much improvement, if any. Is there a way to go back to the previous Thunderbird version, and if there was, I do not have a record of that versions number. Please help.
Fogot to add: Thunderbird is using now 1.1 G memory. Thanks Wyne for the "spinner".
