Hi, I'm not sure exactly when this started happening but when I click in the right half of the address bar the suggestions which come up now include "Search with Google" and "Search with Amazon" and several recent site visits (facebook, BBC etc) but doesn't include "google.co.uk". I like to return there as a route to gmail, google drive etc. It used to include "google.co.uk" before "Search with Google" and "Search with Amazon" started appearing, which I guess was on a Firefox update. I'm on Firefox 77 on W10.

Any suggestions please?

Hi PeteJG, in Firefox 75+, Firefox changed to showing your first 8 Top Sites from the new tab page when the cursor enters the address bar instead of your classic frequently visited URLs list.

Option #1: Curate the Top Sites list

You can unpin/dismiss unwanted items from the list, and add/pin/rearrange sites you want in the top 8. So you could lock google.co.uk into a spot on the list. This article has more info: Customize your Firefox New Tab page.

If you don't normally use the built-in new tab page, you should be able to open it with either of these internal addresses (paste to address bar and press Enter to load it):

  • about:newtab
  • about:home

Option #2: Disable the Top Sites list

If you turn off the Top Sites section of the new tab page, Firefox switches the automatcially opening list in the address bar to the classic Show History / frequently visited URLs list. If you want to try that, the steps are in this article: Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content.

Can you get it set the way you like?

My web and app activity is on, but I still can't see my personalized recent search history in the Google search bar. Instead, it shows me "trending searches." How can I get my recent searches back?

Solution Open Google > More > Your data in search > Google Account > Data & personalisation > Search settings > Private results > Check use private results option.

Great, thanks. turning off "Top Sites" does exactly what I want.
