Write in TB 38, type a letter, all the Contacts with that initial letter appear in a list for selection. In TB 78.7.1, not. Is there a setting I should change?

It works here. First, check that autocomplete is enabled in Options/Composition & Addressing, then see if it works in safe mode (hold Shift when launching TB). If it works in safe mode, there's probably an incompatible add-on.
