In Firefox application settings I go to the General > Applications > Choose how Firefox handles the files you download from the web or the applications you use while browsing. From there when I try to set it to open PDF documents itself, I only see options "Always ask", "Save file" and "Use other". I tried using the "Use other" option and set it to Firefox, but the setting always sets back to "Always ask". I'm unable to set Firefox to open pdf documents inside Firefox, they just always download.

I did read many many threads on this issue on the web, I'm clearly not the only one with this problem, but none of the solutions proposed worked for me. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I daresay you would remember changing a preference in about:config so this probably isn't the answer. If you want to open pdf documents, the following preference should have its default value which is false: pdfjs.disabled. To get the option restored in Settings, you may have to restart if you need to change that preference.
