I just installed FF v96.0.0 and immediately noted that the background is back to being black or dark themed again for this HORRIBLE PROTON UI.... I have been using Firefox since v2 or was it v4 so long time...

Mozilla I am tired of these terrible UI changes you keep making and it needs to stop... please at least add some user config options so we can at least disable the ugly proton UI features..! as the about:config proton UI options don't work right... anymore..

Most of the about:config preferences related to Proton only worked in Firefox 89-90; in newer versions they can cause problems.

There are things you can do to get a lighter theme you like, such as switching to the built-in Light theme or adding one on from the Add-ons site (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/themes/). However, themes cannot restore the tab separators or change the shape of tabs. Those would require delving into the unofficial/unsupported realm of userChrome.css.

If you already had userChrome.css rules and they stopped working in Firefox 96, it could be because they were restricted by a media selector -- you need to remove that now. This thread is an example: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1363880

I do not use userChrome.css...

I do use the following theme.. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/three-wolf-moon-shirt/

and the theme was light colored in the menus and bookmarked for [FF (v95.x.x)] .. but is back to being the ugly dark color with FF v96.0.0 what gives Mozilla..?!

you misunderstand me.. the bookmark separators are still there they just are not visible due to the dark theme crap..

Sorry, you said bookmark separators and I was thinking tabs.

That theme triggers dark mode throughout Firefox because of the light-colored text on the tab bar. Before Firefox 96, fewer parts of the browser followed the toolbar theme.

well the bookmark separators don't change color from dark to light with the theme change.. is this a bug? I tried a number of themes I have installed.. they all trigger the dark theme... no fair... they used to work just fine before... lighter colored drop down bookmark menus

Sounds like a bug.

I'm not sure why they didn't flip to dark before. Maybe there was some other setting I don't remember that influenced that.

ok thx for the reply... I didn't get an email so I ended up forgetting about this post... sorta.. its so annoying.. can't we just have better manual control of the bookmark and their settings? can you file a bug report or should I?

I'm a little overloaded, so it would be great if you could file it.

As far as I can tell:

Firefox 89 started using dark menu backgrounds when text on the inactive/background tabs is light/white.

Firefox 96 started using dark sidebar and page backgrounds when text/button icons on the main part of the toolbar is light/white.

I don't know how long there was a separator color issue.

Thank you for filling that bug. Hopefully one of our developers or a member of the Mozilla community will be able to look at it very soon.
