Thunderbird opens and is permanently trying to re-open a previous tab, with the oscillating dots. It will not respond while trying to do this. How can I close this tab?

I have had to move temporarily to outlook because I am unable to open thunderbird. It is trying to re-open a previous email showing oscillating dots. After a long pause thunderbird closes.
What is your anti-virus software?
