my Thunderbird inbox is suddenly being flooded with duplicate emails from months ago. I delete them and more take their place. It's making the program unusable.

Is this a POP account? If so, the popstate.dat file appears corrupted and not resetting, This may be some external program interfering with Thunderbird The popstate.dat file keeps track of the most recently downloaded message. If it is corrupted, Thunderbird starts downloading everything,
