How can I make my Quicktime plugin work again?

Before installing the Firefox v3.6, my quicktime plugin was working. After I installed v3.6, the quicktime plugin didn't work. I tried to uninstall v3.6 and installed back v3.5, but the quicktime plugin is still not working. How can I make it work again or how to fix this? Thanks.

Is there a way to undo the installation of Firefox v3.6, meaning to remove any traces of Firefox 3.6 installation, because this problem only came after I installed Firefox 3.6.

I'm able to play streaming videos from websites (e.g. http://www.singingsuccess.tv/videos/?vid=251) BEFORE I installed v3.6. AFTER installing v3.6, the streaming video now shows a blue Q with a question mark in the center. I tried to uninstall that version and install back v3.5, but the problem still exist.

Thank you and hoping for your prompt reply. More power.

The video on the website you posted requires Adobe Flash, not QuickTime. You must have an old version of QuickTime set to play Flash content, which is why you are seeing a blue Q with a question mark. You need to download and install the latest version of QuickTime for Windows from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

While you are at it, you should update your other plugins. You can go this page to see a list of outdated plugins and update links:

The issue I believe is not with the plugins update because all the plugins have been working right before I installed the new version of Firefox (v3.6). After I installed this new version, the problem started... And also, the plugins I have are updated.

What I wanted to know is if there would be a way to "Undo" the installation so as to regain back whatever was there in my Firefox, or is there any way to remove whatever files the installation has saved in my computer.

Anyway, thanks Alice for the information and for trying to answer my problem.

Does http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ show that QuickTime is up-to-date?

I doubt that the Firefox update has anything to do with your problem with steaming video from http://www.singingsuccess.tv/videos/?vid=251 - That page, like I said, is supposed to work with Adobe Flash, and having an old version of Quicktime can cause the problem you reported.

Are there any other streaming media sites you are having problems with, so that someone can check?

See Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems for steps you can take to troubleshoot Firefox.

If you want to completely remove Firefox (e.g., in preparation for a "Clean Resinstall"), see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox#On_Windows

I've tried and checked the links suggested here by cor-el and Alice. Unluckily, still the problem exists... so I'll see what else I can do about it... maybe use Internet Explorer in the meantime until FF gets a fix on this on later FF versions... because the site with the flash content is playing perfectly with IE browser, so maybe I'll just have to do with that at the moment. Additionally, I tested a site with quicktime flash content and it was working. But the Adobe site where they have a sample flash is showing this "Question mark and Q" image. So, hopefully, when FF releases a newer version, I won't face the same problem when I install that new version.

Thanks cor-el and Alice for your patience in helping me fix this problem... I really, really appreciated your help, especially the links you gave. I learned a lot from those after spending time reading those. Thanks a lot! =)

But the Adobe site where they have a sample flash is showing this "Question mark and Q" image.

<sigh>

That's because QuickTime is trying to play the Flash content but it cannot.

Sorry I can't help you further but, you did not answer my question, Does http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ show that QuickTime is up-to-date?

If you have an old version of QuickTime and can't update for some reason, you can reconfigure it in "QuickTime Preferences -> Browser -> MIME Settings" to not play Flash media. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/QuickTime#QuickTime_browser_settings

As a last resort, you can disable the QuickTime Plugin in Firefox, so that you can view Flash content, by going to "Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins", selecting the QuickTime plugin, and clicking "Disable".

Hi Alice. I found out from the link you gave that my quicktime plugin needs to be updated. When I tried to click on update, it showed me to the site of quicktime for downloading and installing a newer version of quicktime (not just a plugin but the whole quicktime including the player). Currently, my version of quicktime is with license (v7.0.3). My question is if I install this newer version of quicktime, will my license still be valid with this newer version or it will become an unlicensed version with limitations to most of the functions of quicktime? I tried to install the quicktime.exe via firefox to update the plugin but it gives an error because the file is not a ".xpi" file but a ".exe" file. Moreover, my current version of quicktime plugin has been working perfectly just before I installed the latest firefox version, so I don't think that my current quicktime plugin is the one causing this issue.

I also tried your other suggestions of disabling quicktime from playing flash content in the MIME settings via QuickTime Preferences, as well as disabling the quicktime plugin in Firefox via Tools -> Addons -> Plugins. But both didn't fix the problem.

So, do you think if I install the new version of quicktime I will still have a licensed version of quicktime?

Thanks for your patience in trying to fix my problems...

You actually have to update the entire QuickTime application to get a new version of the QuickTime plugin that Firefox uses.

I don't know what you mean by a licensed version of QuickTime. Do you have QuickTime Pro (paid version) or the free version?

If you are updating the free version, just download it from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and then install it on top of your current version (no need to uninstall it first).

If you are updating QuickTime Pro, I copied this from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12301362&#12301362

Re: need new install of quicktime pro Posted: Sep 19, 2010 5:28 PM

Download a free version of Quicktime. Open it and choose Edit. Scroll down to Preferences and choose Register. Once you enter your Registration Key, it will automatically update your version to QuickTime Pro (this is what I just did on my PC).

You could also post a new question in the QuickTime for Windows forum at discussions.apple.com

P.S. It's also possible that you have outdated QuickTime plugins in the Mozilla Firefox Plugins folder, since you said that reconfiguring the MIME settings didn't help. Close Firefox, then go to "My Computer" and open the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins folder and see if it contains any files named npqtplugin*.dll and, if found, remove them. Then restart Firefox.

Hi Alice...

I read that post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12301362) but his case is different. Yup, I have QuickTime Pro (licensed version) for 7.0.3. That's why I'm worried that if I update my QuickTime, my license might not work for the latest version.

Regarding your latest suggestion of deleting the npqtplugin*.dll, I tried every single step but the problem is still there.

The person in the apple discussion topic had to uninstall and then reinstall QuickTime, which is why he had to re-enter his QT Pro license, so that's the "worst case" scenario. I think that simply installing the latest QuickTime version over itself should not remove the license but as a precaution, copy it down for safekeeping. Of course, you can ask a question on apple's discussion forum to cover your bases.

As for why you cannot reconfigure your current QuickTime Preferences to remove the setting to play Flash media via the QuickTime browser plugin:

Did you find and remove any entry for Flash Media in the QuickTime Preferences Browser tab, MIME settings window, under Miscellaneous category?

Regarding your latest suggestion of deleting the npqtplugin*.dll, I tried every single step but the problem is still there.

You may also need to delete the pluginreg.dat file in your Firefox profile folder. It will be regenerated when you next restart Firefox). Ref: http://kb.mozillazine.org/QuickTime#Resetting_the_QuickTime_browser_plugins

Before going any further, could you open a new tab and then click on "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" and click on about:plugins? That will open a page with a list of your installed and enabled plugins. Do you see an entry under the QuickTime plugin for the MIME Type application/x-shockwave-flash ? (if possible, could you copy all of the QuickTime MIME Type entries from the about:plugins list here?) I want to confirm that QuickTime is set to play Flash media.

Did you find and remove any entry for Flash Media in the QuickTime Preferences Browser tab, MIME settings window, under Miscellaneous category?

Yes, I found it and removed the check mark before the entry for Flash Media and restarted the browser, but still the same.

You may also need to delete the pluginreg.dat file in your Firefox profile folder.

I already tried deleting the pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox profile folder, and still the same.

Do you see an entry under the QuickTime plugin for the MIME Type application/x-shockwave-flash?

Yes, I found that entry in the plugin File name: npqtplugin7.dll and it shows swf under the Suffixes column and Yes in the Enabled column.

The same entry is available in the plugin File name: npqtplugin8.dll with the same entry in the Suffixes and Enabled column (i.e. swf and Yes).

I tried to copy and paste the entire page of the plugins list but due to limited characters, it didn't allow me to post the entire contents of the plugins list.

more options

What is the location of that QT plugin?

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Issues_related_to_plugins#Identifying_installed_plugins

You can see the installed plugins on the about:plugins page.
If you set the pref plugin.expose_full_path to true on the about:config page then you see the full path of plugins on the about:plugins page.
It is best not to leave that pref set to true as it exposes that full path to web servers, so reset that pref to false after you are done with the about:plugins page.

You can open about:plugins and about:config via the location bar, like you open a website (about: is a special protocol to access some build-in pages).
If you get a warning when opening the about:config page then you can confirm that you want to continue.

See also "Manually uninstalling a plugin" on Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

You can copy and paste only the relevant QuickTime part of that plugins list form the troubleshooting page.

Your about:plugins list shows a bunch of npqtplugin*.dll files (npqtplugin8.dll, ...7.dll etc) in the Firefox plugins folder, which you need to delete again, assuming they are actually there and not just an artifact from a corrupted pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox profile folder.

You need to reset the QuickTime browser plugins again.

Close Firefox completely, using File -> Exit, then check the Windows Task Manager processes list to make sure there are no firefox processes listed (or reboot the computer).

Next, open the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins folder and DELETE all QuickTime plugins (npqtplugin*.dll files) like npqtplugin8.dll, npqtplugin7.dll, npqtplugin6.dll ...... and npqtplugin.dll.

Now open the QuickTime plugins folder (C:\Program Files\QuickTime\Plugins) and RENAME all npqtplugin*.dll files by placing an X in front of the file name (to be on the safe side), e.g., rename "npqtplugin7.dll" to Xnpqtplugin7.dll etc.

Next, then go to the Firefox profile folder, which in Windows XP is C:\Documents and Settings\"yourusername"\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\"profile folder" (named something like "xxxxxxxx.default") and inside, delete pluginreg.dat.

Finally, open the QuickTime applet in Windows Control Panel (or QuickTime Preferences from within the QT player) and go to the Browser tab, MIME settings. Go through all the mime types and make sure Miscellaneous-> Flash Media is unchecked (I would check it, then un-check it to be sure). Make any other changes you wish to the media types, then click OK, OK again to exit QuickTime preferences, then open Firefox and test.
