As of a month or so ago, I could search on Firefox and it worked fine. Now, most all the time when I search, I get only commercial sites. Very disappointing. I then just go to Explorer or AOL and get the search results without hardly any commercial sites. Is there a setting that I can change to get back to good search results?

Your search toolbar can be customised, you can choose which sites it will search. See Use popular search suggestions in the Firefox Search bar

Of course if you are complaining about the results from say Google, and possibly the amount of adverts that is a separate matter.
