Which version of Ubuntu are you using? To install new versions of software, go to Synaptic Package Manager in System->Administration. Search there for "Firefox", and install it. What you are downloading and opening with archive manager, is a tar-ball archive of Firefox. Installing it is more complicated process than through the Synaptic, so as a new user you are recommended to use Synaptic.
