Before I clicked to open Firefox, a window popped up on the screen (with a small Firefox logo at the top) and said it strongly urged to download an update. The "click for more details" was pale and wouldn't open. Is this a real message from you, or is it a "copycat " scam.

If you are getting that message when Firefox isn't even open, my guess is that it is a "scam". Firefox isn't able to give you message like that when it is not even open and running.

You are missing the latest 4.0.1 update, so use the Help > About Firefox menu item to make Firefox look for and install the 4.0.1 update - from within Firefox.

It is possible that you are still on the beta update channel if you ever installed a Firefox 4 beta version or a release candidate.
You can check that by looking at the pref app.update.channel on the about:config page.
If the value of that pref is beta then it is better to download and install the latest Firefox 4.0.x release.
