How can I eliminate the "new tab" when I open Firefox to my preset Home Page?

I have Firefox installed on a desktop and a netbook. On the desktop, when I launch Firefox it takes me to my homepage, and that is the only tab open. On the netbook, it opens to the homepage correctly, but there is also a second, blank tab, carrying the header "New Tab", just as though I had clicked on the "New Tab" icon in the toolbar. Since my homepage is a specialized search engine which opens each result in a new tab of its own, having the blank one already in place is annoying. How do I stop it from opening on launch?

Make sure that there isn't a pipe symbol appended to the home page setting.

I don't know what a pipe symbol is. The links that you sent don't seem to apply to my problem. I have the home page set as I want it, the update message is not appearing, I just get an extra blank tab when I open the home page.

A pipe symbol is this character: |
You usually find that symbol on the keyboard just above the Enter key.

If that symbol is appended to the Home page setting then a blank tab is opened every time that you click the home page button.
