How do I make Firefox my default browser (instead of e.g. Internet Explorer)?
When loading software that requires connection to the internet, they try to do so via Internet Explorer, which is not working. I want my default browser to be Firefox and change whatever settings are necessary to accomplish this.

Firefox 3 and above: "Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General / System Defaults -> (checkmark) Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup -> Check Now"
