Did a fresh install of Win 7. Installed Firefox 4.0 because 7.??? was driving me crazy with the "Firefox can't find the server at...". Turns out 4.0 sucked to. Upgraded to 8.0 and of course the "Firefox can't find the server at...." is still happening. This is (no kidding) quadrupling the amount of time I have to spend getting around. I have tried all the suggestions you have to try and fix this. This only started a month or so ago and it has now started on my laptop which is strictly for business and is only used 2-3 times a month. Is there a problem with Firefox? Do I have to uninstall it and look for a different program. I can't believe i'd have thought Internet Explorer was better but that has become the case.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Tried that before, crossed my fingers and tried it again. Same result as before....no change. This has been going on for so many versions now that it may be time to say goodby to Firefox. The frustration and time spent trying to access websites is getting to be too much.
