why have my back and forward functions stopped working?
My forward and back arrows have stopped working and I am not able to go back or forward even with a mouse. The mouse is alright with all other browsers.

Do the sites you visit show up in your history?
Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Using the " Safe Mode " the issue of no back or forward arrows or functions, now is the question of why did they stop? I don't have a clue as to why. The problem started just before going to 8.0.1 and it was fine always up 'till all of a sudden the issue reared its ugly head.
I forgot to mention is that before I went to "afe Mode" my History is absolutely fine.
