User Account Control (UAC) of win7 notifies you before changes are made to your computer that require administrator-level permission. The default UAC setting notifies you when programs try to make changes to your computer, but you can change how often UAC notifies you. It might be that you have your computer to “Always notify”.

To change the settings in User Account Control : Open User Account Control Settings by clicking the Start button and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type uac and then click Change User Account Control settings.

Probably you must disable UAC.

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.

Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".

Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

  • Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
  • "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected

Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

None of that worked for me. And I don't think disabling UAC is a good idea at least if it's a work computer rather than my own.

On the computer that has the UAC Popup, is Firefox trying to install an update? I noticed you are using Firefox 9.0.1 on the computer you used to submit this. If you update the computer that is giving the issue to Firefox 10.0.2, does the Popup go away (it will happen one more time after restarting for the update)

It might be. I usually set it to alert me but don't automatically download, since the plug in I use sometimes need time to catch up and be compatible. I'll check it out when I'm back at that one.

This problem makes Firefox unusable for me. I've liked Firefox, so I am sad to have to remove it.

Oh, jeez, don't give up so fast. That's definitely fixable. I could never give up Firefox for a little nit like that.

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
