the upgrade goes smoothly. the latest version is downloaded and I activate it. Then I hit the icon on the screen but when firefox comes up, it has a sentence saying that I am not on the latest version and need to upgrade. I did this twice with same result. At the same time the firefox I do get works- web sites open ok, etc. and I check the version and learn that it is indeed, the latest version 10.

Is the information from an old google home page that you are using ? if so it is an obsolete message from a page that is no longer maintained.

Firefox now by default will use about:home as the homepage. (type in about home in the location bar to see the page).

Assuming you are posting from the machine you are discussing your system info aside shows you are on Firefox 10 which is the current release version. One way to check the version you are using is Firefox button -> Help -> About Firefox
