Problem with Firefox 14.0.1 and Java

Since I upgraded to firefox 14.0.1, I can't access a site which requires the latest version of Java (#36, I believe). I've installed that on my computer, but the site won't load. However, I have firefox 13.0.1 on another computer, and it has no problem at all accessing that site.

I tried accessing that same site on IE on the same computer I have firefox 14.0.1, and IE first asks me if I want to run Java and when I reply yes, it loads the site just fine. But I hate IE and want to be able to run the program on firefox. Firefox 14.0.1 never asks about Java. It just won't load the site.

I'm running firefox on a PC with XP.

I think this has to do with add-ons and Java, but have no idea which add-ons I should have or which I shouldn't have. Currently I have no Java add-ons but when I search for available Java add-ons, I'm given 3 possibilities: Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0, Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0, or Java Platform SE 7.

The computer with firefox 13.0.1 (also XP) does not have any Java add-ons running but it shows Java Console 6.0 as disabled and Java Quick Starter 1.0 as disabled.

Anybody have any ideas?

The question is: am I going to be able to function without Java on my computer?

Before Flash conquered the internet, Java was an important host for interactive content. But lately, you will find it is seldom used.

Of course, most sites use JavaScript, but Firefox handles JavaScript natively; it is not necessary to install Java to run JavaScript (long story about why the names are similar even though the technologies are distinct).

All three plug-ins are enabled. In my original email, I hadn't looked at the plug-ins, but the three you cite are there. I still can't load the page with 14.0.1, but I have no problem with IE.

Thanks for trying.  :)

7.5 is the latest, check it : http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

in what site you can not access ?

more options

7.5 is the version I have installed.

When i say I can't access the site, I mean that I can get to the site and sign into the site with my user name and password with no problem, but the layout of the site won't come up. I talked to the site owners, and they said that the kind of problem I'm having occurs when there's a Java problem. But this doesn't happen in IE or on the computer with 13.0.1 where I can access the layout of the site fine.

The site is a proprietary company site, so I don't feel comfortable giving it out, and one couldn't check it out without a user ID and password.

Try uninstall java and install again to see if the problem still occur .

Does Java show as installed and working on the Java test pages?

I tried both of those, and they both came out successful. Java was installed, and it was the recommended version: Version 7 update 5).

I'm probably going to give up on Firefox 14 and get to the site through IE which works fine. I won't upgrade my other computer to 14, but stay with 13.

Thanks for your help.

You might already have tried this, but just in case: when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

1. Clear Firefox's Cache

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"

2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here

While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

Then try reloading the page.

Things get stranger here.

I uninstalled Java completely. And then on a chance, I tried to access the site. This time I got an error message saying Missing or incorrect version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Install 1.5 or later. I clicked OK AND THE SITE OPENED. I saw what I usually see. I don't know if it's working--it's a file transfer site--and can't find that out before Monday since there are no files to download from there yet.

Ok, so then I decided to install Java again. I did the install, was told it was successful. When I checked the Program list, it had installed not only the version 7, 5 but also something called Java FX 2.1.1.

This time when I tried to access the site, the same problem occurred. I could sign in but i couldn't get to the site's file transfer layout. It froze.

So I uninstalled both Javas, and I WAS ABLE TO GET IN. To repeat, I'm not sure the file transfer capability works and won't be able to find out until Monday, but it appears that I'm further ahead than I was.

The question is: am I going to be able to function without Java on my computer? I haven't checked that out yet.

Thanks to all for helping me with this. I'll let you know Monday or Tuesday how things are playing out.

Thanks for this. I didn't know that at all. I've always assumed Java was essential to watch movies and video. You can tell how little I know about the subject.  :)

I was finally able to test the file transfer site after having removed Java from my computer, and it worked fine.

Thanks to all who responded with help.
